Jonathan had been discharged from a Sarasota Hospital only 5 days earlier when he suffered a devastating fall while exiting his shower. Jonathan had been recovering from a minor stroke which he had experienced only several weeks prior to this incident. He had made almost a full recovery of motor function with only a few minor balance issues remaining.
The rehab staff and Jonathan's family had felt that a continuing recovery in the home setting would be the wise choice at this stage. Hospital discharge staff and Home Health Professionals had strongly advised the family to make the bathroom as safe as possible for Jonathan as soon as it could be done. Plans were made to contact Mr. Grab Bar, Inc. - Sarasota Grab Bars to install bathroom grab bars in both walk in showers and next to the toilets .
Unfortunately Jonathan had insisted that this was not necessary and absolutely refused to have this modification done. This devastating incident and the sequence of events which followed could have easily been prevented with a few simple modifications.
This type of scenario occurs more commonly than one can imagine, and should serve as a wake up call to many of us who try to minimize the importance of bath safety.
